<p style="text-align: justify;">An experiment was carried out to investigate whether the application of gibberellic acid (GA) along with NaH2PO4 and/or Na2SO4 could ameliorate photosynthetic variables and enzymes in chickpea cultivar DCP 92-3 without compromising the nitrogen fixing activity. Before, sowing the seeds of chickpea were soaked for 8 h in 10-6MGA. 60 and 70 days after sowing (DAS), the plants were sprayed with 10-6MGA along with 2 kg P and /or S/ha in two equal splits. Performance of the crop was assessed in terms of chlorophyll content (Chl), net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), carbonic anhydrase activity (CA) and one most significant N-fixing enzyme, NR. Treatment (16) SGA+FGAPS proved best, it enhanced Chl content by 46.16% and 48.84% PN by 64.24 and 65.37%, NR by 22.37% and 22.46% respectively at 90 and 100 DAS. CA at 100 DAS only and gs at both stages of sampling found non-significant. Moreover, CA enhanced by 64.56% at 90 DAS also.</p>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Coastal region covers a long strip along the east coast (West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu) and west coast (Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala). Salinity is mainly due to the presence of saline ground water at shallow depth and frequent sea water inundation in the low lying areas. Sea water intrusion into the aquifers may be direct, but also range of complex geochemical processes like, inter-aquifer mixing, mobilization of brines, water-rock interaction and anthropogenic contamination. NaCl and Na2SO4 are the dominant salts, with abundance of soluble cations in the order of Na&gt;Mg&gt;Ca&gt;K. The salt reaches the soil surface through capillary rise during dry season and makes the soil saline and unproductive for agriculture. Salinity ranges 0.5 dSm-1 in monsoon and 50 dSm-1 in summer. Proper understanding about the nature, properties and prevailing constraints related to diverse group of coastal soils is necessary to undertake better management practices to improve the productivity and quality of such low productive salty soils.</div>

Coastal saline Soils of India: A review

<p style="text-align: justify;">The present study was undertaken to know the effects of salinity on nodulation and leghemoglobin content in two cultivars (NDM-17 and Pusa Kasauri) of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-greacum L.) treated with rhizobium. The pot experiments were conducted following completely randomized block design method. Two sets of pots were maintained with one set treated with rhizobium and other without. The sets were irrigated with saline water of different electrical conductivities (0.2, 3.2, 6.2, 7.2, 10.2, 12.2 and 14.2 dSm-1) created with NaCl, Na2SO4, NaHCO3 and CaCl2 salts. Observations on nodules number, weight and leghemoglobin content were recorded 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing . The nodules growth decreased with increasing levels of salinity. Seeds treated with rhizobium ameliorated the deleterious effect of salinity at all levels besides improving the fertility of soil and growth of root nodules by nitrogen fixation. Present findings revealed that maximum number, weight and leghemoglobin content in cv. NDM-17 was higher as compared to cv. Pusa Kasauri in both treated and non-treated with rhizobium indicating it be the tolerant of the two cultivars.</p>
