VARIABILITY AND CORRELATION STUDIES IN GROUNDNUT (ARACHIS HYPOGAEA L.)
1Department of Oilseeds,
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore - 641 003, India
ABSTRACT
Fifty seven groundnut genotypes were evaluated for genetic parameters. High heritability estimates combined with genetic advance were observed for number of secondary branches, number of unproductive pegs, number of immature pods, number of mature pods, total number of pods, total number of gynophores, maturity index, shelling percentage and 100-kernel weight indicating that these characters are governed by additive genes. Hence there is a possibility of further improvement of these traits through simple selection procedure. The correlation analysis revealed that Kernel yield per plant showed significant and positive association with days to 50 per cent flowering, plant height, number of secondary branches, number of unproductive pegs, number of immature pods, number of mature pods, SMK weight, SMK number, total number of pods, total number of gynophores, shelling percentage, 100-kernel weight and pod yield. The association of kernel yield with other characters was non-significant.
