GENETIC VARIABILITY AND ASSOCIATION OF COMPONENT CHARACTERS FOR EARLINESS IN COWPEA {VIGNA UNGUICULATA (L.) WALP.}
1Genetics and Plant Breeding, Department of Agricultural Botany,
Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar - 608002, Tamil Nadu, India
ABSTRACT
The genetic variability study was carried out with thirty genotypes. High estimates of genetic variability coupled with high heritability and genetic advance were observed for plant height at the time of first flowering, plant height at the time of 50 per cent flowering and plant height at the time of 50 per cent maturity indicating their dependability for effecting selection; Seed yield per plant had high significant positive correlation with total dry matter production and harvest index both at phenotypic and genotypic levels. The path coefficient analysis indicated that plant height at the time of first flowering, plant height at the time of 50 per-cent flowering, plant height at the time of 50 per cent maturity and total dry matter production are important for effecting section
