EVALUATION OF WATER USE EFFICIENT GROUNDNUT GERMPLASM AND IDENTIFICATION OF ELITE GENOTYPES FOR SOUTHERN KARNATAKA
1UAS, Bangalore, AICRP on Groundnut, Agricultural Research Station,
Chintamani- 563 125, India.
ABSTRACT
One hundred water use efficient accessions of groundnut were evaluated for genetic parameters,
viz., variability, heritability and genetic advance. The estimates of PCV and GCV were high for
number of mature pods per plant, pod yield per plant, kernel yield per plant, haulm yield per plant
and oil yield per plant. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance was noticed for 100 –
kernel weight, haulm yield per plant, chlorophyll content, pod yield per plant and plant height. This
indicates that these traits are mainly governed by additive gene action and responsive to selection.
Therefore, it would be rewarding to lay due emphasis on the selection of these characters for rapid
improvement in pod yield .Based on the mean performance of the genotypes, CTMG-1, JAL-16,
JAL-17, TIR-12, and K-134 could be chosen as parents in drought resistance breeding programme
or can be directly released as varieties after their stabilisation for scarce rainfall areas as they
exhibited superiority for most of the characters
