A survey of different towns/districts of Haryana was conducted during 2002-03 to study the physico- chemical characteristics of sewage and its effect on pollutant metals content in soils and plants. The sewage waters were slightly alkaline (pH 8.05-8.95) in reaction, with electrical conductivity 1.42 to 3.07 dSm-1 and organic carbon content 61 to 70 mgL-1. The micronutrient and heavy metals concentration in soil and plants are found within permissible limits of WHO. But their continuous monitoring for potentially toxic elements in soils and plants before using for irrigation is needed to minimize health hazards.
