<div style="text-align: justify;">In the present investigation, 6 numbers of each apparently healthy adult Pati duck and local fowl of Assam were utilized for detailed gross, histomorphological, histochemical and ultrastructural studies. The Harderian gland in the Patiducks &nbsp;and Fowl were located in the medioventral region of the orbital cavity attached along with the eye ball. The gland was not having any grossly demercablelobulation but still there was dorsally slightly narrow part whereas the ventral part was somewhat more wider. In duck, from the capsule, thin connective tissue septa penetrated into the gland and divided parenchyma it into lobes and lobules which were unequal and polygonal in shape. Each lobule contained a central lumen. From the capsule and septa thin streaks of interstitial connective tissue penetrated between the acini and tubules. The columnar epithelial cells lining the acini showed considerable variation in height depending on their functional state. The nerve fibers were also extending from the capsule inside the parenchyma along with the other connective tissue fibers. Harderian gland of Fowl was also covered with a thin connective tissue capsule and consisted of coarse collagen, fine reticular and elastic fibers, blood vessels, &nbsp;and nerve fibers, which were penetrating the parenchyma very frequently by forming septa and trabeculae. The glands were to be of multilobulartubulo-alveolar type and emptied into a wide lumen which was lined by columnar epithelial cells. The histochemical sections were found positive for PAS Alcian blue. The reaction for acid phosphates and alkaline phosphatase were also moderate to intense in the harderian gland. The scanning electron microphotograph of harderian gland showed the acini, secretory granules and connective tissue fibers in the duck and fowl. The secretions of the gland were accommodated inside the acini and looks like a woollen ball.&nbsp;</div>

Macro and Micro anatomical study of Harderian Gland of Duck and Fowl

<div>The present study was aimed to examine histochemical changes in the Harderian gland of pre and post hatched chicks from 11 day of incubation to 24 days of age. In pre hatched groups, the gland was in the developing stage. There was no well defined parenchyma, septa and capsule in early embryonic stage. Histochemical observation revealed that weak or negligible activity of PAS, AB/PAS and Sudan black B was seen in epithelial lining of Harderian gland on 18th and 20th day of incubation. The gland was compound tubule-acinar type at 20th day of incubation, consisted of capsule, parenchyma and stroma. PAS activity was seen in the capsule, septa, epithelial lining of acini and tubule and interstitial connective tissue cells. PAS activity was aggregated towards the apical part of the tubular epithelium as well as at the free luminal surface epithelium of the acini. PAS activity increases with the development of connective tissue component of Harderian gland with the advancement of age. The Harderian gland was predominantly mucus and lipid secreting gland. All epithelial cells of the glandular unit of Harderian gland contain both neutral and acidic mucin. Intense AB-positive activity was seen at the apex of tubule with the advancement of age. Sudan black B activity was recorded in the cytoplasm of epithelial lining of tubule and acini of the Harderian gland and their presence increases with age.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Background: Pancreatic stellate cell (PSC) is now known to play a critical role in pancreatic fibrosis in chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. In health, quiescent PSCs maintain normal tissue architecture. 
 
Methods: The immunohistochemistry of the pancreas of guinea pig six animals each from 0-2 weeks, 2-8 weeks, 8-16 weeks and 16-32 weeks age groups irrespective of sex were conducted by procuring the animals from the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Tissues were normally processed and embedded in paraffin and paraffin sections of three micron thickness were cut and immunohistochemistry staining protocol was followed with using primary antibody markers namely GFAP, alpha SMA and vimentin.&nbsp; 
 
Result: In guinea pigs of 0-2 weeks of age, quiescent pancreatic stellate cells surrounding the acini showed mild positive vimentin immunoreaction. Mild alpha SMA immunopositive reaction was noticed in the quiescent pancreatic stellate cells of 2-8 weeks, 8-16 weeks and 16-32 weeks of age groups within the pancreatic acini. The star shaped quiescent pancreatic stellate cells in the pancreas were located in the interacinar spaces or periacinar spaces, with elongated cytoplasmic processes. Strong vimentin positive quiescent pancreatic stellate cells were found in the pancreatic acini of 2-8 weeks, 8-16 weeks and 16-32 weeks of age groups.</div>

Immunohistochemical Identification of Pancreatic Stellate Cells in Developing Pancreas of Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus)

The histoenzymic studies on sublingual salivary gland of 15 buffalo foetuses ranging from 11 cm CVRL (78 days) to 100 cm CVRL (full term) were conducted. The foetuses were categorized into three groups based on their curved crown rump length (CVRL). At 11-19 cm CVRL (78-114 days), a weak activity of phosphatases and oxidoreductases was observed in the acinar cells and ductular epithelium. Between 28-37 cm CVRL (136-157 days), a weak to moderate diffused granular alkaline phosphatase (AKPase) activity was observed in the mucous acini whereas oxidoreductases showed moderate activity. The enzyme activity was progressively increased with advancement of the gestation period. AKPase activity was more in the lumen of acini and along the intercellular canaliculi at 42-100 cm of CVRL (168 days- full term). Large ducts exhibited strong activity for oxidoreductases indicating increased metabolic activity of cells.&nbsp;

Histoenzymic studies on sublingual salivary gland of buffalo&nbsp;during prenatal development

Background: The pancreas is a dual function gland acting as both an endocrine and exocrine. Production of digestive enzymes like lipase, amylase, trypsin and chymotrypsin is regulated by exocrine part. Hormones like insulin, glucagon and somatostatin, which are vital for regulation of blood sugar, are under regulation and control of endocrine part. The present study was aimed to obtain histological and histochemical observations of porcine pancreas. 
 
Methods: Total six samples (n=6) of pancreas were procured immediately after slaughter and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin and Bouin&rsquo;s solution. Tissue processing was done by routine paraffin block preparation by alcohol-benzene schedule. 
 
Result: Pancreas of pig was encapsulated by connective tissue capsule. It was divided into lobes and lobules by connective tissue septa. Major glandular parenchyma was exocrine part while lightly stained endocrine part was only about 1-2% of the total mass. Acini and ducts were the constituents of exocrine pancreas. Acini possessed centroacinar and acinar cells. Acinar cells had three different forms, viz. active, resting and exhaustive cells. Pancreatic ducts along with goblet cells were moderately positive for glycogen, weakly sulphated mucins and acidic mucopolysaccharides. Islets of Langerhans had three types of cells i.e. alpha, beta and delta. Beta cells outnumbered other two cell types forming major part of pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Islets of Langerhans had profound blood supply. The present work will be a complementary contribution to enhance understanding of porcine pancreatic anatomy and its further implication for the betterment porcine production.

A Histomorphochemical Study of Porcine Pancreas with Emphasis on Cellular Mapping

Background: The pancreas is an accessory organ of the digestive system and also an important endocrine organ of vertebrates that produce and release substances in the body. The pancreas has both endocrine and exocrine function. Its endocrine function is to regulate blood sugar levels by secretion of hormones like insulin, glucagon, stomatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide and an exocrine function that helps in digestion. The study was performed to document the ultrastructural details of pancreas of guinea pigs by scanning and transmission electron microscopy.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 
Methods: Six adult healthy guinea pigs of 16-32 weeks of age (Irrespective of sex) were procured from the Department of Laboratory Animal Medicine, TANUVAS as per ethical committee approval. Animals were dissected according to standard operating procedure by using the Carbon dioxide asphyxiations as per CPCSEA norms and pancreatic pieces were utilised for SEM and TEM study.&nbsp; 
 
Result: Pancreas was irregular in shaped and showed splenic, ventricular and intestinal lobes. In SEM, the parenchyma was covered by the dense irregular capsule. Each lobule contained many acini which were connected by a thin, long duct with branched pattern arrangement with increasing wall thickness and diameter. In TEM, the pancreatic tissue consisted of glandular lobules comprised of acini, islets of Langerhans and connective tissue between the lobules. Numerous mitochondria and golgi complexes were also present in the acinar cell cytoplasm along with zymogen granules and rough endoplasmic reticulum. The centroacinar cells were also found. A special type of interstitial cell named telocytes and each was found with many telopodes in the exocrine part of pancreatic parenchyma. Among the four islet cell types, alpha and beta cells could be identified.&nbsp;

Ultrastructural Architecture Studies of Pancreas in Guinea pig

<div>Background: Secretions from the seminal vesicular gland enhance the survival and reproductive functions of the spermatozoa. The order Chiroptera has evolved great diversity in their reproductive structure influenced by location, abiotic factors and availability of food. Eidolon helvum is a near threatened tropical African fruit bat and little is known of its reproductive biology. The aim of this study was to highlight the structure, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the seminal vesicular glands of Eidolon helvum.&nbsp; 
 
Methods: The paired seminal vesicular glands of 16 adult male Eidolon helvum were obtained in May during the early rainy season in tropical Nigeria. The glands were evaluated grossly, histological and ultrastructurally. 
 
Result: The spirally coiled tubular organs were divided into numerous lobules of tubular-alveolar glandular acini lined by simple cuboidal epithelium made up of basal cells and mono or bi-nucleated cuboidal secretory cells. PAS positive secretions projected from the apical surfaces. Principal secretory cells contained numerous rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, Golgi complexes, electron lucid secretory vesicles, electron dense granules and lysosomes. The unique merocrine and apocrine secretions contributed to the formation of vaginal plugs.</div>

Light and Electron Microscopic Studies of the Seminal Vesicular Glands of the African Straw-coloured Fruit Bat, Eidolon helvum

Background: Islet transplantation is a potential treatment option for selected patients with type 1 diabetes. The limited supply of human islet from cadavers and poor islet yield remains a significant barrier to progress in the field. So, the use of porcine islets holds great promise for large scale application for the transplantation of the islet. The primary aim of this study was to describe the gross and morphological studies of the porcine pancreas to rule out its similarity to human pancreas. 
&nbsp; 
Methods: Pancreas was collected from eight apparently healthy Large White Yorkshire pig (6-7 months of age). The gross and morphological studies were analyzed by using different staining techniques. 
&nbsp; 
Result: The pancreas appeared as pale pink triangular lobulated gland located along the dorsal aspect of the abdominal cavity behind the stomach having exocrine and endocrine part. Histologically, two types of acinar cell were identified i.e. active and resting acinar cells. The islets were richly vascularized and were separated from the exocrine acini by a thin layer of collagen, elastic and reticular fibers which were seen extending into the interior of the islets. Mainly three types of cells were observed in islets i.e. alpha (A), beta (B) and delta (D) cells. Epithelial duct and secretory cells showed strong positive reaction for both Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and Alcian Blue (pH-2.5) whereas islets of Langerhans showed moderate activity for both.

Observation on the Gross and Histology of the Exocrine and Endocrine Pancreas in Large White Yorkshire Pig

<div>Background: In developing countries goat rearing is the sustainable source of income for marginal farmers. The goat milk contains lower fat per cent (3.5%) as compared to cow (4.1%) and buffalo milk (7.4%), with smaller and homogenous fat globules. It is suitable for the persons with poor digestibility of cow milk and infants having mother milk intolerance. To improve the milk production it is important to understand the mammary gland pattern during the different phases of lactation. The present study aimed at analyzing these changes by histological and histochemical observations. The mammary gland is composed of parenchyma containing acini and stroma including the ductual system. These components change during the lactation cycle.&nbsp; 
 
Methods: The present study was conducted on 24 goats, eighteen in lactating stage where as six from nonlactating stage. The mammary glands were collected from local abattoir with known history of stage of lactation and divided into three groups as early lactation (2-4 weeks), mid lactation (5-6 weeks) and late lactation (&gt; 6 weeks). The histological and histochemical studies were performed during the different stages of lactation and in non lactating stage to observe the morphological and morphometrical changes along with the presence and absence of different components.&nbsp; 
 
Result: The lobules of the mammary gland were polygonal, triangular, oval or elongated in shape during early lactation stage. Approximately all the alveoli observed in early lactation were filled with variable quantity of eosinophilic substance and appeared foamy, due to presence of variable size of fat vacuoles. In mid lactation the lobules became highly irregular. The long and short diameter of lobules was 1041.69 &micro;m and 563.93 &micro;m, respectively. The intralobular stroma was inconspicuous hence alveolar wall appeared to touch each other. In late lactation lobules became shorter in size. The large alveoli showed folded and collapsed appearance. In nonlactating stage well defined alveoli, clusters of desquamated cells were seen and degenerated alveoli were also observed. These histomorphological changes in the secretory unit of the mammary gland reflect the lactation yield and milk composition during different stages of lactation.&nbsp;</div>

Histomorphological Changes in the Mammary Gland of Local Indian Goat during Lactation Cycle

<div style="text-align:justify">Background: The sublingual salivary gland being one of the major salivary glands contributes to a substantial amount of saliva secreted into the mouth. Saliva contains water, various enzymes, mucopolysaccharides and lubricating glycoproteins. It has an important role in providing lubrication for eating and vocalization, aid digestion and supply saliva for pH buffering. The study of prenatal development is prerequisite to understand the normal developmental biology of an organ. The documentation of normal foetal growth can serve as a guide for understanding the consequence of harmful influences at various stages of gestation. The present study was aimed at elucidating the histogenesis of sublingual gland of buffalo during prenatal as well as neonatal life. 
 
Methods: The study was carried out on 36 buffalo foetuses, during different stages of prenatal development, as well as 6 neonates. The fetuses were categorized into three groups based on their curved crown rump length (CVRL). The ontogenetic events in histogenesis of sublingual salivary gland of foetal and neonatal buffaloes were observed. 
 
Result: The primordial anlage of monostomatic and polystomatic parts of sublingual gland was observed at 39th day and 53rd day of development respectively. The primary ducts (interlobular) were first observed at 80th day of development. The lobulation of the gland was started at 107th day of development, whereas the capsule formation was initiated by the aggregation of mesenchymal tissue at 121st day of development. The duct system was completed at 121st day of development. At same day, the terminal tubules attained the structure of the acini. The typical compound tubulo-acinar nature was first observed at 122nd day of development. The gland showed predominantly mucous type of cells at 137th day of development. The myoepithelial cells were first appeared at 138th day of development. The monostomatic and polystomatic parts were clearly distinguishable by connective tissue at 170th day of development. In neonates, the gland was of compound tubulo-acinar nature with a well-defined capsule. Localization of acidic and neutral mucopolysaccharides was observed in mucous and goblet cells. Fine lipid droplets were observed in intralobular as well as interlobular connective tissue, however, phospholipids were found in the cell membrane of secretory acinar cells and ducts.</div>
