STUDY ON WOOL FOLLICULAR CHARACTERISTIC AND S/P RATIO IN DECCANI SHEEP WITH REFERENCE TO AGE
1College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences,
MAFSU, Parbhani - 431 402 (M.S.), India
ABSTRACT
The present study was conducted on 24 Deccani sheep. The animals were grouped into four
groups as 0-3 months age, 4-6 months age 7 to 9 months age and 10-12 months age. Crimp
and kemp wool follicles were observed in all groups. Presence of medulla in the kemp wool
follicles and its absence in the crimp wool follicles. The S/P (Secondary/Primary) ratio of kemp
wool follicles in group I, II, III and IV was 1.84 + 0.14, 2.30 + 0.09, 2.90 + 0.09 and 4.50 +
0.06 respectively. The S/P ratio of crimp wool follicles in group I, II, III and IV was as 1.05 +
0.03, 1.90 + 0.07, 1.95 + 0.12 and 1.96 + 0.04 respectively.
