STUDIES ON THE BIRTH WEIGHT OF INDIGENOUS CATTLE OF ASSAM
1College of Veterinary Science,
Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara, Guwahati-781022, India.
ABSTRACT
The birth weight data on 90 indigenous calves of Assam, born during August’05 to April’06 were
analyzed to study the effects of sex of the calf and the lactation order of the dam on birth weight of
calf. The overall mean body weight at birth of indigenous cattle of Assam was found to be
14.667±0.150 kg. The effect of sex of the calf was found to be significant on birth weight. The mean
body weight at birth in male calves (15.466±0.203 kg) was significantly higher than the female
calves (13.868±0.201 kg). The difference in birth weight between lactations was found to be
non-significant.
